This isn’t inherently sinister. In a capitalist democracy, public excitement is valuable fuel for political and financial support. But when corporate brands fuse so tightly with national symbols, patriotism becomes something you can—quite literally—monetize.
Economic and Political Drivers
The shift to privatization isn’t just about marketing—it’s about budgets. Private companies can sometimes build and launch rockets more cheaply than NASA could in-house. They move faster, iterate quickly, and can tap into private investment beyond taxpayer funding.
Politically, it’s a win-win: lawmakers get to tout American launches without demanding Apollo-level spending. But there’s a trade-off. NASA becomes dependent on the fortunes and priorities of a few corporations.
